Song of the Day: OBN IIIs – No Time for The Blues

obn iiis

You had better learn to like OBN IIIs and you had better do it quick because pretty soon all those “little shit cool kids” that you stare down your nose at in what “used to be” your favorite bar will be pumping this shit like it’s nobody’s business, especially not yours. And it won’t be your business. Because you’ll remember when you read this post and didn’t even bother to hit play and spend the 3:42 to become just a tad cooler of a human being, and oh, it will sting. Besides, the lead singer, Mr. Orville Bateman Neely III, will kick your ass if you don’t. And trust me, he will. I once saw him tell a crowd of about 500 Thee Oh Sees fans that he was gonna kick all their asses if they didn’t like his band and every single one of them left an OBN III enthusiast. No shit.

This is the new song off their upcoming third album Third Time To Charm, out May 27 on Tic Tac Totally. Start saving.

Here’s a ripper of a bonus track too: B-side off their debut 7″

R.I.P. Gwar’s Oderus Urungus

oderus

Big shock to the metal world this morning with the announcement that Dave Brockie(Oderus Urungus), frontman for legendary thrash monsters Gwar has passed away at the age of 50. He was found in his home Sunday night. Police do not expect foul play.

Gwar has seemingly been around forever and for me personally was one of those band that while you may not like every album you always had to contemplate catching them live every time they came through your town. They made their name on wildly theatrical shows, employing grotesque costumes and gigantic stage props ranging from larger than life paper mache depictions of celebrities(usually about to be maimed in some way and filled with enough fake blood to fill a small swimming pool) to monstrous inflatable penises that would shoot goo all over the crowd. Venues would cover every surface in the venue with plastic in attempts to minimize the mess and wearing clothes you actually gave a shit about would be a mistake made only once. Gwar was a must see live band, and while I’m happy knowing I have more than a couple Gwar shows under my belt, it’s a little disheartening to know the option to attend another bloodbath will no longer be there for us minions who bowed at the feet of Antarctica’s greatest export.

Pest In Peace Mr. Urungus. You were truly one of a kind….

Song of the Day: Outer Minds – We Are All Stone

outer minds

With a musical nod to L.A.’s famed Whiskey a Go Go circa ’67 and a visual nod to both Tim Burton movies and Tool videos from the mid nineties, Outer Minds have concocted one of the stranger music videos I have seen as of late. Filled with ghoulish, organ playing skeletons and hunchback monsters brooding over possible forbidden fruits, the stop motion video was filmed in both 16mm and 35mm film by Zebulon Medearis and Andrew Barker. It’s nice to see bands still putting quality effort into video releases instead of  just bowing and catering to the insta-gratification craving fan bases of today. Quality over quantity always wins. (And yes, I know I’m just as guilty as the next guy).

‘We Are All Stone’ can be found on the Chicago band’s 2012 album ‘Behind The Mirror’ and word is we can expect new tunes from the band later this year, which will hopefully lead to more tripped out visual aids as well. Turn down the lights and enjoy this one…

Morning Hype! Liquor Store and Dirty Fences!

kfn

After a slow few weeks(and a couple of disappointing gigs)here in Philly when it comes to the live music front I’m more than stoked to be getting ready to check out a killer triple bill at Kung Fu Necktie tonight. Things will kick off with Nancy, a Brooklyn punker band I really don’t know a whole a lot about but judging by their Bandcamp page they definitely seem fitting to be opening tonight’s festivities.

Second on the bill and easily the most anticipated of the three bands for me is more Brooklyn love by way of the architects of Brick Backgrounds 9th best album of 2013, Dirty Fences. Playing an amped up style of late 70’s, early 80’s power pop that would make a young Elvis Costello proud, I haven’t stopped listening to these guys since I first heard a track in some random skate video last summer. And speaking of skateboarding, the Dirty Fences dudes apparently have some DIY backyard concrete at their Brooklyn compound, further raising their stock around here. Wish I had a backyard.

Closers tonight are the mighty Liquor Store, probably voted most likely to save rock and roll if they could find a way not to get themselves kicked off the ballot. Saw them open for Natural Child last summer and they dropped jaws with their Nugent meets Dictators rock and roll hybrid so I’m definitely hyped on a full set from the New Jersey crew. When it comes right down to  it tonight’s probably gonna kill so if you’re in the area quit complaining about the weather and get to KFN. You know you want to….

Morning Hype! Solo King Buzzo!

I have to say that when it was announced that Melvins head honcho Buzz Osborne(King Buzzo) was releasing a solo 10″ acoustic album with a tour to follow(or is it the other way around?) my interest level was about equal to my hearing that Pat Boone was doing an album of metal covers. I like my Melvins heavy, sludgy and without restraint, none of which I particularly associate with unplugged acoustic records .But then, like a good little music fan, I put my biases aside and holy shit wouldn’t you know it; the first single is actually pretty fuckin good and now serves a great little teaser to what may or may not lie ahead for The King Of Sludge. Turns out opening your mind a little bit CAN be a good thing. Who knew?

King Buzzo – 2014 solo acoustic dates
Feb. 25 Los Angeles, CA Scion Rock Show @ The Satellite
March 2 Minneapolis, MN Grumpy’s
March 6 Omaha, NE The Waiting Room
March 8 Kansas City, MO The Riot Room

March 17 Memphis, TN Hi-Tone

New Tunes: Marvin Berry And the New Sound

marvin berry

All McFly jokes aside, Marvin Berry and the New Sound have some legitimate buzz around them right now and with due reason. Their debut full length comes out Feb 25th on Don Giovanni, their record release show is Feb 21st at Union Pool in Brooklyn with Liqour Store(more on those glorious bastards in the coming weeks) and to top it all off they’re actually really good, justifying the aforementioned hype that lately has seemingly been bestowed on pretty much any snot nosed kid that owns a guitar in Williamsburg. But here, high energy 60’s tinged garage rock mixed with a healthy dose of 70s Bomp Records worship and the recipe for good times is nearly perfected. Hoping for more tour dates soon but for now here’s three songs from the upcoming full length “Bootleg”. Power Rock!

Song of The Day: Death – North St.

Death Detroit

The nearly forgotten-forever band from Detroit that forced people to question the true origins of punk rock have unearthed some more material for another “new” album coming out in April, presumably found in a dusty closet and and apparently sat on since 1980. I had initial doubts when I first played it, assuming it would be more scratchy demos and outtakes not unlike their second release ‘Spiritual, Mental, Physical’ but instead I got an grim history lesson in late 70’s Detroit hood life enveloped by a primitive, guitar driven rock and roll. Another underground masterpiece to be released by Drag City? Fingers are crossed on this end….

Song Of The Day: The Shrine – Nothing Forever

11183_JKT

I’ll be the first to admit that I generally dig The Shrine a lot more live than I do listening to them at home or on the headphones but that may be soon to change with this sick new jam coming off the upcoming release “Bless Off”, out March 11th on Tee Pee Records. Starts with some serious Sabbath worship before digressing into the classic 80s style thrash that dominated the first album. A mid track return to the altar of Sabbath breaks shit down proper and leads into a one-arm-up neckbreaker of a finish. Skate rock done near perfect. Here’s hoping the rest of the album can hold up because if it does summer at FDR skatepark may already be sound-tracked….
