Morning Hype! Cinco de Mayo!

dugdugsfirst_2_
Today marks the 154th anniversary of Cinco de Mayo. It was this day in 1862 that 2000 members of the overmatched Mexican army dominated powerhouse French forces that numbered around 6000 in what is known as the Battle of Puebla. It was a case of “won the battle, lost the war” for Mexico, as the country was eventually overtaken and ruled by the French into 1867 before being liberated with help from their friends to the north. But The Battle of Puebla served as a rallying battle cry for Mexico during the war, uniting the nation and building strength in their resistance, and it now stands as a point of national pride. Republican nominees should take note.

Hands down, the best Mexican band I’ve ever heard is Dug Dug’s. Their 1972 album Smog is, in my opinion, a heavy psych masterpiece and their contributions to Mexican rock and roll should be as celebrated as Santana. Won’t happen, but it should. Echa un vistazo a continuacion!

Morning Hype! King Gizzard’s Coming In HOT!

king gizzard

“It’s supposed to be their heaviest album yet.”

Those eight words will always make my ears perk up, but when they reference a band whose latest release was chock full of flutes and clarinets, they tend to echo just a tad louder. Don’t get me wrong, King Gizzard and Lizard Wizard’s most recent offering, Paper Mache Dream Balloon is a satisfying, if not ethereal, journey through the more mellow vibrations of pop psychedelia, but frankly, it just doesn’t rip. And I like ripping. So when I opened my inbox and found their new, soon to be released opus Nonagon Infinity waiting for me, those eight words rang loud. And my God, were they ever an understatement. The first song explodes into the speakers, seemingly mid chord, and from there it simply just does not slow down. A nine song, full blast heavy psych assault on the listener’s aural comfort. Each song is seamlessly blended into the next, creating an infinity loop of pure psychedelic riff rock that just begs to be left on. And on, and on and on. The onslaught begins April 29th. Tour dates below. Prepare yourself.

R.I.P. Gwar’s Oderus Urungus

oderus

Big shock to the metal world this morning with the announcement that Dave Brockie(Oderus Urungus), frontman for legendary thrash monsters Gwar has passed away at the age of 50. He was found in his home Sunday night. Police do not expect foul play.

Gwar has seemingly been around forever and for me personally was one of those band that while you may not like every album you always had to contemplate catching them live every time they came through your town. They made their name on wildly theatrical shows, employing grotesque costumes and gigantic stage props ranging from larger than life paper mache depictions of celebrities(usually about to be maimed in some way and filled with enough fake blood to fill a small swimming pool) to monstrous inflatable penises that would shoot goo all over the crowd. Venues would cover every surface in the venue with plastic in attempts to minimize the mess and wearing clothes you actually gave a shit about would be a mistake made only once. Gwar was a must see live band, and while I’m happy knowing I have more than a couple Gwar shows under my belt, it’s a little disheartening to know the option to attend another bloodbath will no longer be there for us minions who bowed at the feet of Antarctica’s greatest export.

Pest In Peace Mr. Urungus. You were truly one of a kind….

Song of the Day: Outer Minds – We Are All Stone

outer minds

With a musical nod to L.A.’s famed Whiskey a Go Go circa ’67 and a visual nod to both Tim Burton movies and Tool videos from the mid nineties, Outer Minds have concocted one of the stranger music videos I have seen as of late. Filled with ghoulish, organ playing skeletons and hunchback monsters brooding over possible forbidden fruits, the stop motion video was filmed in both 16mm and 35mm film by Zebulon Medearis and Andrew Barker. It’s nice to see bands still putting quality effort into video releases instead of  just bowing and catering to the insta-gratification craving fan bases of today. Quality over quantity always wins. (And yes, I know I’m just as guilty as the next guy).

‘We Are All Stone’ can be found on the Chicago band’s 2012 album ‘Behind The Mirror’ and word is we can expect new tunes from the band later this year, which will hopefully lead to more tripped out visual aids as well. Turn down the lights and enjoy this one…

Song Of The Day: The Shrine – Nothing Forever

11183_JKT

I’ll be the first to admit that I generally dig The Shrine a lot more live than I do listening to them at home or on the headphones but that may be soon to change with this sick new jam coming off the upcoming release “Bless Off”, out March 11th on Tee Pee Records. Starts with some serious Sabbath worship before digressing into the classic 80s style thrash that dominated the first album. A mid track return to the altar of Sabbath breaks shit down proper and leads into a one-arm-up neckbreaker of a finish. Skate rock done near perfect. Here’s hoping the rest of the album can hold up because if it does summer at FDR skatepark may already be sound-tracked….

New Tunes: Pink Mountaintops – North Hollywood Microwaves

jag250.11183v5

Well, this is certainly one way to announce your return. Stephen McBean is bringing back the sleazy, sexed -up Pink Mountaintops for the first time since 2009 and if the first single off the April 29th released “Get Back” is any indication then he certainly hasn’t forgotten how to sleaze or sex. “North Hollywood Microwaves” features Annie Hardy from Giant Drag along with a few references about anal sex, donkey punches and of course bear cum. Throw in some real smutty sax and this album, along with most everything else McBean and whoever he’s aligned himself with at any given time have ever released, will definitely not suck. Unless maybe you ask real nicely….

Record Release Hype! Jesus Sons!

jesus sons

The first Record of the Year candidate sees it release today and if you like music meant to fuel never ending road trips broken up by bouts of whiskey soaked ass shaking then you’ve come to the right place. Jesus Sons have crafted a record that already belongs in the annals of great rock n roll, a rather admirable achievement for a debut album. It supplies the possibilities of sound-tracking everything cool in life, from drinking alone in a dusty roadside bar at 2pm to shirtless motorbike joyrides through deserted city streets at 2am. With thick layers of riff after riff, howling harmonicas and pulsing bass lines there’s an almost filthy sex that oozes out of the speakers, like the leather jacket clad girl of your dreams biting her lip and sliding out of her jeans, staring you down and daring you to maintain eye contact. This album is proof that old fashioned rock n roll, GOOD rock n roll, can still represent what it set out to represent some fifty plus years ago: Danger, Sex, Sleaze and a serious lack of giving one single Fuck. If you’ve ever claimed rock and roll, you need this record.

Jesus Sons self titled debut comes out today on the quickly making a name for themselves Mock Records. You can listen to it below via Bandcamp while you decide which format to BUY IT in.

New Tunes: Fat White Family – Wet, Hot Beef

fat white family

Everything I read about this London band Fat White Family seems to refer to how dirty they are how, how bad they smell or how shitty awesome they are. Don’t care. It’s raw, creepy psych rock and I fuckin’ like it. They released a full length called Champagne Holocaust earlier this year which I missed entirely until a week ago and more recently this three song collection entitled “Wet, Hot Beef” as a split with Taman Shud. It reminds of music we would’ve put on a mixtape back in the day before going to trip out in the woods somewhere, each of us making a tape based solely around trying to fuck everyone else’s night up. Not sure what liking this without needing massive amounts of whatever says about me today but as I eluded to earlier, don’t care. Like it.  Parts 1,2,and 3 are packaged into one easy, convenient to use video below.
