Morning Hype! MISFITS REUNION!!

misfits-fiend-club-woven-patch-rsp0049

What a skull crushing two words to wake up to!  I actually had to shake the cobwebs out of my head and double check my calendar to make sure it wasn’t April Fools Day. But, nope! For the first time in over 30 years, Glenn Danzig, Jerry Only and Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein are getting together and playing this year’s incarnations of Riot Fest in both Denver and Chicago. I don’t know how Riot Fest pulled this one out of their ass but hot damn, they actually did it and now they’re hosting the biggest Ghouls Night Out of the year. As for praying for more dates, you can try God or The Devil Himself. Don’t think it really matters at this point. Thank you, Riot Fest!

New Tunes! Red Hot Chili Peppers!

preview-rhcp2

Here’s the first track off the new Red Hot Chili Peppers album, The Getaway. It doesn’t suck, which is what I expected. And more importantly, it doesn’t sound like another Stadium Arcadium rehash, which is more than the last few years of Chili Peppers music can claim. Kinda sounds like wandering around L.A.at night. Fitting, I suppose. We’ll see how the rest of the album plays out, but this is a good start for a band that has amazed as much as it has depressed.

Morning Hype! Cinco de Mayo!

dugdugsfirst_2_
Today marks the 154th anniversary of Cinco de Mayo. It was this day in 1862 that 2000 members of the overmatched Mexican army dominated powerhouse French forces that numbered around 6000 in what is known as the Battle of Puebla. It was a case of “won the battle, lost the war” for Mexico, as the country was eventually overtaken and ruled by the French into 1867 before being liberated with help from their friends to the north. But The Battle of Puebla served as a rallying battle cry for Mexico during the war, uniting the nation and building strength in their resistance, and it now stands as a point of national pride. Republican nominees should take note.

Hands down, the best Mexican band I’ve ever heard is Dug Dug’s. Their 1972 album Smog is, in my opinion, a heavy psych masterpiece and their contributions to Mexican rock and roll should be as celebrated as Santana. Won’t happen, but it should. Echa un vistazo a continuacion!

New Tunes: GØGGS

GØGGS cover

Three of my favorites in recent years have gotten together to get heavy. Garage rock overlord Ty Segall has teamed up with long time partner in crime Chris Moothart, he of Fuzz fame, and Chris Shaw, who fronts the refreshingly angry Ex-Cult. They are calling themselves GØGGS, and with the help of ruling label In The Red Records, will be blasting us with a full LP’s worth of music this July. Here’s a taste…

Morning Hype! Brown Acid!

brown acid 2

Growing up, there were a lot of urban legends surrounding the mythical, mind expanding drug known as LSD. There was the one about the kids that hated the high school French teacher so much that they dosed her morning coffee with a couple hits. She apparently made it through two classes before having to “inexplicably” excuse herself for the rest of the day. By all accounts though, those two classes were the most pleasurable the students experienced throughout her entire career. Another story that made the rounds was the one about the dude that was smuggling acid across the Canada US border. Not the smartest brick in the bunch, he taped 300 hits directly to his stomach underneath his shirt. The story goes that he didn’t realize that it would be in his best interest to put something between the acid and his skin, so when he started sweating while crossing the border, as amateur drug smugglers are wont to do, he absorbed all 300 hits. This unfortunate turn of events set him up for a life of brain damage, or as the kids back in the day referred to it, “turned him into a fucking vegetable, dude.”

I imagine there are a fair number of urban myths surrounding the bands featured on RidingEasy’s Brown Acid compilations. For  the most part, these bands are relatively unknowns from the 70s, except to the most persistent of crate diggers and rock historians. These are the bands that maybe got to share a joint with Ozzy when they opened for Sabbath in their hometown, or had to jump out of the way of a flying television when partying in the local hotel room with Zep. Or maybe they didn’t. That’s the allure of the urban myth, you just never know. What I do know is that RidingEasy Records, with the help of Permanent Records in Los Angeles, is doing these bands a great service because they absolutely deserved to be heard, even if they did lie to their buddies way back when about sleeping with Grand Funk’s groupies. Both “Brown Acid: The First Trip” and the brand new “Brown Acid: The Second Trip” are more than worthy additions to your collections so here’s what you do: Get your buddies over, drop a hit, drop the needle and drop a story about how you played Paper/Rock/Scissors with Axl Rose to see who got to have the threesome with those two Latvian supermodels back in the day. What were their names again?

Weird Shit Of The Day: Wu-Tang Clan’s Million Dollar Album

WuTang1-

No, that is not what it cost to produce it. That’s what they want one person to pay. And by one person, I mean literally one because they are only manufacturing one single copy. It’s apparently a double album titled ‘Once Upon A Time In Shaolin’ that has taken the prolific group twenty plus years to finish. They will tour it through museums and the like before the final sale, with an entrance fee of $30-50 and heavy security to make sure no recording devices find their way anywhere near it. RZA and crew seem to be on a mission to turn music back into an collectible piece of art and its an interesting point, although one could argue that charging a million dollars for an album does equal harm to the “value” of music as giving it away for free does. At least people hear it when it’s free and can make a choice to financially support a band and their music by buying hard merchandise, attending shows etc. To me, someone owning a million dollar record just means they probably have more money than they need. Bragging rights among rich buddies doesn’t add any value to a composition of music.

“The idea that music is art is something we have advocated for years. And yet its doesn’t receive the same treatment as art in the sense of the value of what it is, especially nowadays when it’s been devalued and diminished to almost the point that it has to be given away for free. We’re making a single-sale collector’s item,” said RZA,  “This is like somebody having the scepter of an Egyptian king.”

Well, at least they’ll know who leaked it online I guess. If you care, the full interview and explanation is right here on Forbes.com. Obviously.
