New Tunes: Pink Mountaintops – North Hollywood Microwaves

Well, this is certainly one way to announce your return. Stephen McBean is bringing back the sleazy, sexed -up Pink Mountaintops for the first time since 2009 and if the first single off the April 29th released “Get Back” is any indication then he certainly hasn’t forgotten how to sleaze or sex. “North Hollywood Microwaves” features Annie Hardy from Giant Drag along with a few references about anal sex, donkey punches and of course bear cum. Throw in some real smutty sax and this album, along with most everything else McBean and whoever he’s aligned himself with at any given time have ever released, will definitely not suck. Unless maybe you ask real nicely….

Record Release Hype! Jesus Sons!

jesus sons

The first Record of the Year candidate sees it release today and if you like music meant to fuel never ending road trips broken up by bouts of whiskey soaked ass shaking then you’ve come to the right place. Jesus Sons have crafted a record that already belongs in the annals of great rock n roll, a rather admirable achievement for a debut album. It supplies the possibilities of sound-tracking everything cool in life, from drinking alone in a dusty roadside bar at 2pm to shirtless motorbike joyrides through deserted city streets at 2am. With thick layers of riff after riff, howling harmonicas and pulsing bass lines there’s an almost filthy sex that oozes out of the speakers, like the leather jacket clad girl of your dreams biting her lip and sliding out of her jeans, staring you down and daring you to maintain eye contact. This album is proof that old fashioned rock n roll, GOOD rock n roll, can still represent what it set out to represent some fifty plus years ago: Danger, Sex, Sleaze and a serious lack of giving one single Fuck. If you’ve ever claimed rock and roll, you need this record.

Jesus Sons self titled debut comes out today on the quickly making a name for themselves Mock Records. You can listen to it below via Bandcamp while you decide which format to BUY IT in.

Morning Hype! Grammy Vomit!

Do the assholes at The Grammy even listen to music anymore? Or are they just handed a list of Billboard best sellers and names based on focus groups? ” Here ya go boys, just pick whatever. And don’t worry about all the funny names…kids these days…ya know?”.

“Hmm….Queens of the…Stone Age? Are they chicks? Oh wait, Led Zeppelin! I’ve heard of them. Check.”

“Nine Inch Nails, Tame Impala…what’s a Tame Impala?….ohh Vampire Weekend! Their fathers are fellow alumni. Check.”

” Kendrick Lamar? Never heard of em. Kanye West…Jay Z…they’re kind of gangster right? Scary. Here we go, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. That sounds white. Check.”

“Let’s see here…Record of the Year….Bruno Mars…. Lorde….Daft Punk? Is that the guy that wears the funny helmet? That should make for good TV. Check.”

And in what was easily the biggest snub of the year, the Grammys/CBS managed to get some of the most influential rock musicians from each of the last four decades onto the stage together at the same time including Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham, NIN’s Trent Reznor, Nirvana/Foo Fighter Dave Grohl and Kyuss/Queens Of the Stone Age head honcho Josh Homme, used the performance as one of the biggest focal points leading up to the event, only to cut it short for a Delta Airlines commercial and promo for one of CBS’s shitty cop shows. I understand advertising and I also understand allotted time slots but if you’re going use a specific performance to sell your self-stroking sham of an “awards” show at least show the fucking performance. Assholes.

And for further proof of their assholery, they have blocked all available video of said performance based on copyright infringement claims. So even if you wanted to watch it, you can’t. Basically what they’re saying is you can go fuck yourself. Artists need to start boycotting this shit.

New Tunes: Obliterations – The Hole 7″

Continuing their punishing onslaught on the hardcore world, Obliterations have released a 7″ through Volcom Entertainment. I’ve said before that these guys are the best thing going in heavy music right now and The Hole does absolutely nothing to dispel that notion. The band also just announced that they’ve signed with Southern Lord Records to release their first full length and will be heading into the studio come March. Below are four tracks to melt your face while you do yourself a favor by ordering the vinyl immediately.

Morning Hype! Not Becoming A Cold Blooded Killer!

So for reasons that I cannot yet explain, I just sat through about thirty-five minutes of Charles Manson’s music that I came across while digging for tunes on Spotify. And hot damn, I fought the Manson charm off like a champ! I feel zero urge to commit any heinous crimes and now I’m pretty sure that my day will just continue on as normal. And by normal I mean going to the wine shop to get a couple of bottles of vino in anticipation of my friend Joel coming to visit tomorrow, as opposed to say,  going to an up and coming pregnant actresses house and killing her and all her friends. Quite rude. I think I’ve made wise choices today, and I’m proud of my mental strength. You should be too. Especially if you’re an up and coming pregnant actress….

This was the closest thing to a good song I came across…..

Afternoon Hype! Burgerama III! Sleep!

Holy moly mountain! Burger Records announced the lineup for their now annual Burgerama festival and it could be the heaviest one yet. I use the word heavy because legendary doomsters Sleep are all up in Burger’s business this year! There have been now confirmed rumblings of a new Sleep record for  some time now and though there’s no release date yet one can only hope/wonder if folks at Burgerama will be getting first taste of some long awaited jams. Throw in heavy hitters like Black Lips, The Dwarves and FIDLAR, not to mention the back from the dead proto punk of Death, something for the hip hop heads in the form of Kool Keith as well as what seems to be the majority of Burger Records signees and it makes for a festival that actually might be worth travelling for. No offense Coachella/Bonnaroo. Full band listings and some classic Sleep below…

Future Hype! Early 2014’s Most Anticipated!

So before we get down to the business of waxing nostalgic on 2013 we though that we’d take a dip into the future and see what the first few months of 2014 will hold for us. These are certainly not the be all end all for what will be good in 2014 nor are they in any particular order. Just some good tunes that we can all look forward to….

1: Jesus Sons “Title TBA” Release Date early 2014. A new project from the former bassist of Brick Background favorite The Spyrals. Garage rock goodness. Out on Mock Records.

2:Black Lips “Underneath The Rainbow” Release Date Mar 2014. Atlanta shit disturbers back with a southern rock/country tinged record. Interesting concept. Out on Vice Records.

3: The Men “Tomorrow’s Hits” Release Date Mar 4th. Brooklyn punkers turned noise folk jammers release an album a year. 2014 will be no different. Out on Sacred Bones.

4: The Pack A.D. “Do Not Engage” Release Date Jan 28th. Vancouver’s criminally underrated duo return with legendary producer Jim Diamond back at the helm. Out on Mint Records.

5: The War On Drugs “Lost In The Dream” Release Date Mar 18th. Philly based rock and roll versed in the art of trippy Americana. Out on Secretly Canadian

6: Natural Child “Dancin’ With Wolves” Release Date Feb 25th. You can take the boys out of Nashville but you can’t take Nashville out of the boys. Hyped for this one. Out on Burger Records

7: Against Me! “Transgender Dysphoria Blues” Release Date Jan 21st.  Hopefully a return to form after the overproduced 2010 effort “White Crosses”. Self released on their Total Treble label

8: Johnny Cash “Out Among The Stars” Release Date Mar 25th. If for some sick and twisted reason you need an introduction, here it is:

Some other records that may pique the interest that I’m sure I’ll touch on through the year include new Bruce Springsteen, Metallica, heavy vibes from Philly’s Hound and pretty much any thing from the new wave of San Francisco’s psych garage scene. Bring it, 2014!

Brick Brothers: Black Mountain/Darker My Love

I’m going to start something new here at Brick Background. How long it lasts remains to be seen though it has plenty of potential and certainly a never-ending stock of supply. You see, I spend a lot of time in front of my computer and have taken to using Spotify when I don’t particularly feel like picking something specific out of the library. For those of you who don’t have Spotify, they have a fantastic sidebar called Related Artists that is actually pretty spot on when it comes to suggestions, as is their “Discover” app which is pretty much the same idea though it just makes suggestions on what you’ve recently been listening to as a whole, not just in relation to a certain artist. also has a similar sidebar that I have used to bounce around their massive log of music. The plan is to find a new artist, be it new to me or new to everybody, it doesn’t’ matter. I may have heard the band’s’ name before, like todays entry, but for whatever reason never gave a good listening to. Link the bands, write some clever little blurb and hopefully help you find some similar minded bands to match to personal favorites you’ve already collected. The bands may not sound exactly the same but there will a link of some sort, a degree of separation if you will. Does that work there? I don’t know, but it’s staying.

Now this isn’t the time to get into the pros and cons of music streaming websites. I understand they don’t pay very much(if at all)to the artists but I believe this should/can/will change in time. It’s easy to see why artists feel like they’re getting ripped off having their art out there basically for free, but they have the choice to put it there or not and more often than not it’s there. And hey, people could just download it for free illegally and then the artist wouldn’t get shit, which is the unfortunate yet blunt truth of it. With music streaming sites at least there are avenues provided to find new music and if that click in the related artist section gets somebody out to a show and they buy a t-shirt or poster as well as bring a friend, well, there’s a couple buck in the band’s pocket that they’re not getting from an illegal download. Again, I believe people forget how new the idea of music streaming is in the grand scheme of things and that there are definitely kinks, especially from the artists standpoint, that still need to be worked out. Things happen really fast in This The New Age but it shouldn’t be forgotten that blank cassette tapes and blank CDs were also said to be rushed into the market and where would your musical tastes be if you hadn’t come across that mix CD/tape that what’s her name slipped into your locker in Grade 11? Exactly.

Today is  a perfect example of the new leading forth to the old(er). My morning began with Black Mountain’s Year Zero, a compilation/soundtrack from 2012 that contains what were at the time five new songs as well as four tracks from previous albums. While browsing the related artists I was surprised to see Darker My Love, a band who admittedly I had written off for whatever reasons, most likely because their name sounds more adept to a bunch of twenty-something boys with eyeliner and their sisters jeans on than it does a bunch of LA psych rockers. I started at the beginning and played through the entire catalog consisting of three full lengths and some demos etc., with their most recent long player coming out in 2010. There’s little else to say about them as their FB page hasn’t been updated in over a year, they don’t seem to have their own website and typing in the word “new” before their name in Google brings up less than favorable reviews of 2010’s Alive As You Are, which leads me to believe they’re either holed up writing new music, broken up entirely or seriously in need of a new publicist. No matter though because today I’m going with a track off the aptly if not lazily named second album  2. The song is Add One To The Other, fitting both with Black Mountain’s heavy psych bliss that brought me to Darker My Love and what will be the ongoing theme of this new-found category. Hope you dig it.

New Tunes: The Warlocks – Dead Generation

Admittedly, I know very little about The Warlocks. They’ve been around for over a decade, were in cahoots with The Brian Jonestown Massacre and have had a bunch of line-up changes over the years. I think they may be one of those bands that every time I heard a new song by them I was distracted or just not in the right mood. Well, that’s apparently about to change with the release of the first single off their new album Skull Worship, out November 28th on Cargo Records. I am fully in the mood for a slow building, intensely dark sounding psych rock anthem that guarantees chills in a smoked filled club. Funny, now that I think about it, I’m always in the mood for that. Guess it’s time to dig into the back catalog while I wait for what will likely be a very well received new record.
