R.I.P. Gwar’s Oderus Urungus

Big shock to the metal world this morning with the announcement that Dave Brockie(Oderus Urungus), frontman for legendary thrash monsters Gwar has passed away at the age of 50. He was found in his home Sunday night. Police do not expect foul play.

Gwar has seemingly been around forever and for me personally was one of those band that while you may not like every album you always had to contemplate catching them live every time they came through your town. They made their name on wildly theatrical shows, employing grotesque costumes and gigantic stage props ranging from larger than life paper mache depictions of celebrities(usually about to be maimed in some way and filled with enough fake blood to fill a small swimming pool) to monstrous inflatable penises that would shoot goo all over the crowd. Venues would cover every surface in the venue with plastic in attempts to minimize the mess and wearing clothes you actually gave a shit about would be a mistake made only once. Gwar was a must see live band, and while I’m happy knowing I have more than a couple Gwar shows under my belt, it’s a little disheartening to know the option to attend another bloodbath will no longer be there for us minions who bowed at the feet of Antarctica’s greatest export.

Pest In Peace Mr. Urungus. You were truly one of a kind….

Morning Hype! Solo King Buzzo!

I have to say that when it was announced that Melvins head honcho Buzz Osborne(King Buzzo) was releasing a solo 10″ acoustic album with a tour to follow(or is it the other way around?) my interest level was about equal to my hearing that Pat Boone was doing an album of metal covers. I like my Melvins heavy, sludgy and without restraint, none of which I particularly associate with unplugged acoustic records .But then, like a good little music fan, I put my biases aside and holy shit wouldn’t you know it; the first single is actually pretty fuckin good and now serves a great little teaser to what may or may not lie ahead for The King Of Sludge. Turns out opening your mind a little bit CAN be a good thing. Who knew?

New Tunes: Obliterations – The Hole 7″

Continuing their punishing onslaught on the hardcore world, Obliterations have released a 7″ through Volcom Entertainment. I’ve said before that these guys are the best thing going in heavy music right now and The Hole does absolutely nothing to dispel that notion. The band also just announced that they’ve signed with Southern Lord Records to release their first full length and will be heading into the studio come March. Below are four tracks to melt your face while you do yourself a favor by ordering the vinyl immediately.

Afternoon Hype! Burgerama III! Sleep!

Holy moly mountain! Burger Records announced the lineup for their now annual Burgerama festival and it could be the heaviest one yet. I use the word heavy because legendary doomsters Sleep are all up in Burger’s business this year! There have been now confirmed rumblings of a new Sleep record for  some time now and though there’s no release date yet one can only hope/wonder if folks at Burgerama will be getting first taste of some long awaited jams. Throw in heavy hitters like Black Lips, The Dwarves and FIDLAR, not to mention the back from the dead proto punk of Death, something for the hip hop heads in the form of Kool Keith as well as what seems to be the majority of Burger Records signees and it makes for a festival that actually might be worth travelling for. No offense Coachella/Bonnaroo. Full band listings and some classic Sleep below…

Song of The Day: The Sharon Tate Experience – Christmas Killer

Apparently The Sharon Tate Experience are a one-time band forming to play the Rise Above Records 25th anniversary Party In London, England at the end of the month. Under the video post the label asks the question “Can you guess who this band is?” By most accounts, its the band who holds the #15 spot on Brick Background’s Top Twenty Albums list of 2013. Regardless of who it actually is though, this is really a great garage nugget and I certainly wouldn’t complain if more of the same was to come from “whoever it may be”…..

Future Hype! Early 2014’s Most Anticipated!

So before we get down to the business of waxing nostalgic on 2013 we though that we’d take a dip into the future and see what the first few months of 2014 will hold for us. These are certainly not the be all end all for what will be good in 2014 nor are they in any particular order. Just some good tunes that we can all look forward to….

1: Jesus Sons “Title TBA” Release Date early 2014. A new project from the former bassist of Brick Background favorite The Spyrals. Garage rock goodness. Out on Mock Records.

2:Black Lips “Underneath The Rainbow” Release Date Mar 2014. Atlanta shit disturbers back with a southern rock/country tinged record. Interesting concept. Out on Vice Records.

3: The Men “Tomorrow’s Hits” Release Date Mar 4th. Brooklyn punkers turned noise folk jammers release an album a year. 2014 will be no different. Out on Sacred Bones.

4: The Pack A.D. “Do Not Engage” Release Date Jan 28th. Vancouver’s criminally underrated duo return with legendary producer Jim Diamond back at the helm. Out on Mint Records.

5: The War On Drugs “Lost In The Dream” Release Date Mar 18th. Philly based rock and roll versed in the art of trippy Americana. Out on Secretly Canadian

6: Natural Child “Dancin’ With Wolves” Release Date Feb 25th. You can take the boys out of Nashville but you can’t take Nashville out of the boys. Hyped for this one. Out on Burger Records

7: Against Me! “Transgender Dysphoria Blues” Release Date Jan 21st.  Hopefully a return to form after the overproduced 2010 effort “White Crosses”. Self released on their Total Treble label

8: Johnny Cash “Out Among The Stars” Release Date Mar 25th. If for some sick and twisted reason you need an introduction, here it is:

Some other records that may pique the interest that I’m sure I’ll touch on through the year include new Bruce Springsteen, Metallica, heavy vibes from Philly’s Hound and pretty much any thing from the new wave of San Francisco’s psych garage scene. Bring it, 2014!

Afternoon Hype! High On Fire! Kvelertak!

Today’s Hype! is brought you by Advil and a greasy spoon breakfast, heavy on the grease. Last night I attended the High On Fire/Kvelertak/Doomriders show at Underground Arts here in Philly and let me tell you, did I ever feel stupid for not putting more time into becoming a fan of High On Fire earlier. Holy shit, they ruled. I have no real explanation for my reluctance to get on board the High On Fire train, I’ve always been a fan of frontman Matt Pike’s legendary doom outfit Sleep and I’ve certainly been known to get the fuck down at a good metal show so I really don’t have an excuse. I guess they’ll just have to accept my apology and continue to take my money any time they come into a 100 mile radius of me again. I repeat, they ruled.

It should also be noted that the lead singer of Kvelertak came onto stage with his head up the ass of an owl. And killed it.

I thought this was the best HOF song of the night:

New Tunes: Pyres – Year Of Sleep

As I hit play to begin the dark journey that is Pyres debut full length, Year Of Sleep, I began to think about metal music as a whole, and the possible lack thereof in my life as of late and it lead me to a question. “If I had to stereotype myself, would I be a metalhead in the truest sense of the term?” Sure, I love metal and more importantly the undeniable atmosphere of live metal music but, and I’m stereotyping here, I seem a little behind when it comes to embracing the full package that is true metal-dom. Hell, I’m gonna take my wife to see Neko Case next month and I’m gonna like it. Not a lot of metalheads claiming that. I’ve never had long hair before but I do have at least three shirts in my closet right now with seriously Satanic overtones. I never attended a single Ozzfest back in the late 90’s-2000s when I was at my concert-going peak but I was face down drunk every Monday for too many years to count at Evolutions legendary Metal Monday in Victoria BC. Yes, I said years. So what makes a metal head a metalhead? If you want the serious be all end all answer you should probably just go watch any of the movies Sam Dunn and co. have made. Those motherfuckers are serious metalheads and go deep into examining the cause. For me, i think it’s the want and need of live metal music. A million shows a year come and go that I want to see, some I do and some I don’t. But when heavy metal rolls through town and there’s a name on the marquee that I want to see, look the fuck out.

I want to see Pyres live. Soon. The new full length from the rapid rising Toronto band makes me want nothing more in life. There is just no possible way that they won’t rule live. The roaring riffs that will emanate from the clubs guaranteed to be struggling sound system will kick me in the fucking teeth. The relentless rhythm attack and growling vocals will involuntarily have me pushing for the front. No one will get in my way. Floor, band, floor, band, floor band. My neck will dictate what my eyes get to see. My brain will beg for the tempo to slow, and it will, masterfully at times, only to rear back and unleash a furious howl upon us, those lucky enough to bear witness to this changing of the guard in heavy sludge music. Pyres has the potential to be everything I want in a live metal show.

What’s great about Pyres ‘Year Of Sleep’ LP is that it is only the first. They, whether conscious or not, have managed to avoid any chance of being pigeonholed. They can right now fit into almost any genre of metal comfortably, leaving a world of exploration open to them on further albums without the unnecessary scrutiny of an increasingly cynical society. Some bands take a swing at big change and they’re instantly sellouts, some don’t change enough and they’re boring or washed up. Pyres will excite with this album, not only because of the colossal heaviness it will blast from your speakers but because the possibilities of where they’re going to take it next. And you’ll have plenty of time to ponder those possibilities because the more you listen to Year of Sleep the more you’re going to want to listen to Pyres. Which really sets them up beautifully, doesn’t it?

Thanks to John at Granite House Records for the hook-up and his patience with my computer ineptitude.
