Friday Hype! Skate Rock!

Sorry for the lack of posts lately, relentless computer problems and a general disdain for some most of the new releases of 2014 have wreaked havoc on my motivation. Also, spring has sprung and with it always comes a renewed vigor for skateboarding. And after an especially long winter its been nice to get a couple solid sessions in this week including a late night indoor jam at a private bowl here in Philly. Good times, good company and good tunes had me waking up smiling this morning. Here’s a couple of classic tracks I heard late last night that can easily soundtrack any session, anytime, anywhere. Roll forever.

Afternoon Hype! Burgerama III! Sleep!

Holy moly mountain! Burger Records announced the lineup for their now annual Burgerama festival and it could be the heaviest one yet. I use the word heavy because legendary doomsters Sleep are all up in Burger’s business this year! There have been now confirmed rumblings of a new Sleep record for  some time now and though there’s no release date yet one can only hope/wonder if folks at Burgerama will be getting first taste of some long awaited jams. Throw in heavy hitters like Black Lips, The Dwarves and FIDLAR, not to mention the back from the dead proto punk of Death, something for the hip hop heads in the form of Kool Keith as well as what seems to be the majority of Burger Records signees and it makes for a festival that actually might be worth travelling for. No offense Coachella/Bonnaroo. Full band listings and some classic Sleep below…

New Year’s Hype! The Kinks!

It was fifty years ago today that one of rock’s most iconic rock bands performed live for the first time at the Lotus House Restaurant in London, England, furthering strengthening the UK’s dominance of popular music at the time. And I bet you that was a killer New Years party. Here are a couple fitting tracks for this New Year’s Eve, and I’d like to personally wish all of you the best in hopes for a wonderful 2014. Be safe tonight, take care of each other and leave two aspirin on your bedside table with a glass of water before you go out. You’ll thank yourself later. Happy New Year!

Three Years Ago Today…..

About thirteen years ago a girl I was kinda interested in made me come out to the university she was attending to see a movie she wanted to check out. I begrudgingly agreed, thinking it would be some documentary about the miracles of modern science and how genetic cell blah blah blah. I envisioned  a question and answer session after, with everyone pointing and laughing at the guy who didn’t even go to that school, let alone possess any sort of scientific knowledge besides building a bong out of pretty much anything. Well, I must say I probably deserved to get laughed at because the movie was Almost Famous and ten years later, three years ago today, I married the smartest, most beautiful woman I have ever met. And holy shit am I ever a better man for it. Thanks, Love!

Song of the Day: Babe Ruth – The Mexican

Babe Ruth’s “The Mexican” can make you trip balls without letting you forget to shake what the Good Lord gave you. Go ahead and shake it. You’ve got a minute before those breezy spanish guitars bring you back to ball tripping status. Nice and easy. Wait, all of a sudden you’re shaking that thang again. What the hell? You hear that crazy laugh? Holy shit, are they ever going off now! You like this? Yeah, you do. The 70’s, man. The 70’s.

Vintage Bricks: The Ramones(circa ’74)

Haha! Look at Joey strutting around like he’s in the New York Dolls, wearing spandex and shit. This is as early as it gets for these legends, folks. 1974. Almost two years before they released their self titled debut and changed the face of music forever. Three songs, six minutes with a minute of bickering for good measure. Nobody did it, does it or will do it better than The Ramones. Ever. End of discussion.
