New Tunes: Mammatus – Heady Mental

Talk about taking your time. The four songs on the new Mammatus album Heady Mental were written in 2007/2008, recorded in 2009, and mixed in 2013 but good things come to those who wait, and this slice of heavy psych stays true to the time tested statement. Mammatus aren’t afraid to get their prog on, as evidenced by the opener Brain Drain, before settling to the familiar territory of psychedelic stoner rock, slowing it down for the ultra trippy Main Brain. Brainbow continues along the same lines before bowing to the crowning jewel of Heady Mental, closing track Brain Train, which rips so, so hard. Like Eddie Van Halen on speed hard. Though its end of year release will probably keep it from most best of lists, this is one that will definitely be getting some serious air-play into 2014. Vinyl and digital release only, so if you’re a CD collector you’re probably S.O.L. but at $5.99 on Itunes it’s a little tough to complain.

I couldn’t find any studio versions of tracks from Heady Mental so here’s some live footage from the SF record release party.
