Vintage Bricks: NoMeansNo

One of my top three Canadian bands of all time and like the Dayglo Abortions from my previous post, Nomeansno is a band that started their playing days in beautiful Victoria, B.C. on Vancouver Island. Anchored by brothers John and Rob Wright with Andy Kerr on guitar until Tom Holliston took over in the early 90’s, Nomeansno having been putting albums out since the early 80’s and with their crazy infusion of punk, prog and jazz have developed cult followings around the world. Collaborations are numerous including a fantastic album recorded with Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys and Alternative Tentacles fame. Their catalog is equally impressive with so many EPs, singles and comps it would be ridiculous to start naming them and that’s in addition to their 10+ full lengths. Live shows are the stuff of legend with “must be seen to be believed” chemistry coupled with ferocious energy and while the boys are certainly closer to their Golden Years than most bands touring and playing in the same style Nomeansno does, the band is showing no signs of slowing down as of yet. Not really sure about their refusal to play in the eastern US as from what I understand it hasn’t happened in twenty some years but I could certainly go for some old man punk rock home cooking out here anytime now.

Nomeansno are just another reason I’m proud to be Canadian. Happy Canada Day!

This first track is a great representation of the live juggernaut that is Nomeansno…
