Vintage Bricks: The Groundhogs

Sometimes I have to wonder how certain bands managed to pass me by. The Groundhogs are a prime example, as this was exactly what we were looking for digging through our parents old records after discovering and subsequently wearing out Sabbath, Zeppelin and Cream in our formative teen years. Yet here I am, almost twice the age as I was then, getting schooled by the 19 year old kid at the record store; “Dude, you don’t know The Groundhogs? Fuck man, just buy them all.” Yeah, whatever teenager. Then I come home home, hit up and YouTube and holy shit, that lil prick was right. I should’ve bought them all. So here’s a track from each of their most formative albums. They’ve been around forever, are named after a John Lee Hooker song and even backed him for a bit late in the late Sixties. These three albums though are early 70’s jams and while the Cream comparisons are inevitable, there’s a rawness that I find intriguing, as though they weren’t quite sure what they were doing but at the same didn’t really give a shit either. Just went for it. For a whole album I definitely would tip my hat to 1971’s Split. Solid fuzz start to finish. Some classic throwback rock and roll for your mid week blues…
