Song of the Day: OBN IIIs – No Time for The Blues

obn iiis

You had better learn to like OBN IIIs and you had better do it quick because pretty soon all those “little shit cool kids” that you stare down your nose at in what “used to be” your favorite bar will be pumping this shit like it’s nobody’s business, especially not yours. And it won’t be your business. Because you’ll remember when you read this post and didn’t even bother to hit play and spend the 3:42 to become just a tad cooler of a human being, and oh, it will sting. Besides, the lead singer, Mr. Orville Bateman Neely III, will kick your ass if you don’t. And trust me, he will. I once saw him tell a crowd of about 500 Thee Oh Sees fans that he was gonna kick all their asses if they didn’t like his band and every single one of them left an OBN III enthusiast. No shit.

This is the new song off their upcoming third album Third Time To Charm, out May 27 on Tic Tac Totally. Start saving.

Here’s a ripper of a bonus track too: B-side off their debut 7″

Song of the Day: Evan Johns and the H-Bombs – Saving Grace

Evan+Johns++His+HBombs

Got turned onto this wildman on a recent record buying mission to Virginia and now I can’t stop listening to it. Evan Johns has been around the block more than once and reading stories about him today I know don’t even know where to start with an introduction so I think I’ll just link up this article right here from The Austin Chronicle and post a video to wet your whistle while you read. This is one of the slower tracks off the otherwise ripping ‘Rollin’ Through The Night’ that was released on Jello Biafra’s Alternative Tentacles label in 1986 but the hook just grabs you so hard its impossible not to pay it the utmost attention. Seriously loving this song right now….

Morning Hype! Liquor Store and Dirty Fences!

kfn

After a slow few weeks(and a couple of disappointing gigs)here in Philly when it comes to the live music front I’m more than stoked to be getting ready to check out a killer triple bill at Kung Fu Necktie tonight. Things will kick off with Nancy, a Brooklyn punker band I really don’t know a whole a lot about but judging by their Bandcamp page they definitely seem fitting to be opening tonight’s festivities.

Second on the bill and easily the most anticipated of the three bands for me is more Brooklyn love by way of the architects of Brick Backgrounds 9th best album of 2013, Dirty Fences. Playing an amped up style of late 70’s, early 80’s power pop that would make a young Elvis Costello proud, I haven’t stopped listening to these guys since I first heard a track in some random skate video last summer. And speaking of skateboarding, the Dirty Fences dudes apparently have some DIY backyard concrete at their Brooklyn compound, further raising their stock around here. Wish I had a backyard.

Closers tonight are the mighty Liquor Store, probably voted most likely to save rock and roll if they could find a way not to get themselves kicked off the ballot. Saw them open for Natural Child last summer and they dropped jaws with their Nugent meets Dictators rock and roll hybrid so I’m definitely hyped on a full set from the New Jersey crew. When it comes right down to  it tonight’s probably gonna kill so if you’re in the area quit complaining about the weather and get to KFN. You know you want to….

Morning Hype! Solo King Buzzo!

I have to say that when it was announced that Melvins head honcho Buzz Osborne(King Buzzo) was releasing a solo 10″ acoustic album with a tour to follow(or is it the other way around?) my interest level was about equal to my hearing that Pat Boone was doing an album of metal covers. I like my Melvins heavy, sludgy and without restraint, none of which I particularly associate with unplugged acoustic records .But then, like a good little music fan, I put my biases aside and holy shit wouldn’t you know it; the first single is actually pretty fuckin good and now serves a great little teaser to what may or may not lie ahead for The King Of Sludge. Turns out opening your mind a little bit CAN be a good thing. Who knew?

New Tunes: Travesura

tavesura

Brick Background is always down to back music made by skaters so here’s a new track from Toy Machine and Emerica pro Leo Romero’s new band Travesura. Mostly instrumental stuff in the vein of Southwest Americana with an extra little added touch of epicness that one could easily see soundtracking someone’s last part in whatever next video gets dropped to blow our minds. Because let’s face it, skateboarding is out of fucking hand these days.

Record Release Hype! Jesus Sons!

jesus sons

The first Record of the Year candidate sees it release today and if you like music meant to fuel never ending road trips broken up by bouts of whiskey soaked ass shaking then you’ve come to the right place. Jesus Sons have crafted a record that already belongs in the annals of great rock n roll, a rather admirable achievement for a debut album. It supplies the possibilities of sound-tracking everything cool in life, from drinking alone in a dusty roadside bar at 2pm to shirtless motorbike joyrides through deserted city streets at 2am. With thick layers of riff after riff, howling harmonicas and pulsing bass lines there’s an almost filthy sex that oozes out of the speakers, like the leather jacket clad girl of your dreams biting her lip and sliding out of her jeans, staring you down and daring you to maintain eye contact. This album is proof that old fashioned rock n roll, GOOD rock n roll, can still represent what it set out to represent some fifty plus years ago: Danger, Sex, Sleaze and a serious lack of giving one single Fuck. If you’ve ever claimed rock and roll, you need this record.

Jesus Sons self titled debut comes out today on the quickly making a name for themselves Mock Records. You can listen to it below via Bandcamp while you decide which format to BUY IT in.
